Whether you are looking for an activity filled beach holiday or just want to enjoy a quiet vacation romancing the sun, sand and azure waters, Rocky Point can be your ideal destination. Also known as Puerto Peñasco, this city is located in the northwestern end of the Mexican state of Sonora, and is on the shoreline of the Sea of Cortez. Since Rocky Point is only about 70 miles south of Arizona’s border, you can easily come here from Arizona to spend your weekends. The place is also a favorite destination of vacationers from California who come here to have a blast.

Apart from a wide variety of beach activities, snorkeling excursions, sunset cruises, or dolphin and whale watching trips, you may even enjoy a shopping spree at the Cholla Mall to pick up some jewelry, pottery, clothing and knick knacks or go to the bars to enjoy the night life of the place. Tasting a wide variety of delicacies can also keep you busy during your holiday at this place. Enjoying your sojourn and unwinding in your own style is what a vacation at Rocky Point promises. So, if you haven’t set foot in this city, it’s time to pack your bags and head straight to the place.

Before the 1920s, the place had no human habitation and only wandering fisherman working in the upper Gulf of California came here. The first hotel was built here by Arizona resident John Stone in the 1920s to cater to the people who came here after crossing the border to escape Prohibition. Flight service from Tucson and Phoenix were started, and a water well was drilled to bring in tourists. However, after a quarrel with the locals, Stone destroyed the water well and the hotel before he left.

Settlement grew again between 1930 and 1941 after a railroad was built in the 1930s to link the rest of Mexico to Baja California, which passed by Puerto Peñasco. However, tourism didn’t thrive until 1993, when the government joined hands with private investors to construct condominiums and other facilities.

In the early 1990s, after the set up of Plaza Las Glorias, more hotels and condos were built. Many restaurants, bars and supermarkets were also set up to cater to the growing tourist population. Though the region experienced some economic instability between 1994 and 1995, the development didn’t get derailed and came back strongly by 1999. The region saw a steady economic growth from 2002 to 2007. Though the real estate market suffered during the economic slowdown in 2007, it has recovered since then and created amenities to woo tourists from far and beyond.

Whether you are on a family vacation to Puerto Penasco or just want to chill out with a group of friends, Rocky Point vacation rentals can offer something or the other to suit your needs. If you want to swim in the Gulf of California, which is also popularly known by the name of Sea of Cortez, you will need to take only a few steps from the verandah of your rooms. What’s more, you can freshen up on your return by using the palupa covered showers on offer.

If going out on the beach or taking a swim in the azure water appears to be too much, you can simply laze on the oversized deck lounges of the veranda of your vacation rental home and enjoy the sun. You may even stay in your room and enjoy programs aired on the 52” satellite HDTV, listen to your favorite numbers using the audio entertainment center, or warm up by sitting beside the gas fireplace. If you have booked a room offering an ocean view, you will have one more option to keep yourself occupied in your room.

Those of you who love to don their chef’s hat can use the spacious kitchen of the vacation rental homes and condos. Since these kitchens come equipped with dishware, appliances, silverware and utensils, cooking up your delicious meals won’t be an uphill task.

Most of the region belongs to the Altar Desert, which extends till the east and north end of the city. There is also a volcanic sector called Sierra El Pinacate. However, barring these, the land of Rocky Point is flat and is bordered on its north and east by Sonoyta - the small mountain range.

Depending on season, the climate of this city varies and the average temperature is usually around 28°C. However, during the summer months, it isn’t unnatural to experience temperatures as high as 50°C. The city is a part of the Sonoran region, which is a desert but is located next to the source of humidity - an ocean. What’s more, the region has areas at high elevation too. All these factors make temperature swings a common thing that tourists coming here will experience. So, while the blistering heat of the daytime can make you uncomfortable, the nights can become pretty cold.
During the spring season from January to May, the average temperature hovers between 15 and 27 degrees Celsius, while the summer months from May to August can give rise to a sweltering climate where the average temperature can vary between 27 and 40 degrees Celsius. Winter during the months of August to December is the time when the region gets frequent rains, and the average temperature during this time can be anything from 15 to 24 degrees Celsius.
